How to fulfill the Michigan Career Development Model (MCDM) in Xello

With an increased focus on graduation rates, you’re probably left wondering: How can I guarantee that our district aligns with the Michigan Career Development Model (MCDM)? Xello can help.

If you’re helping students complete their Educational Development Plans (EDPs) or implementing the Michigan Career Development Model (MCDM) in your district, here’s how Xello can support the process.

The MCDM helps schools ensure students graduate with a clear plan for their future through career awareness, exploration, and preparation. The framework outlines how districts can support students in building the knowledge and skills needed to make informed career and education decisions.

Unsure about what the MCDM contains, and how to meet its requirements with your students? Good news! Xello has been working closely with the Michigan Department of Education to ensure our program aligns with many of the expectations set out in the MCDM.

In this piece, we’ll walk you through how your district can use Xello to fulfill the core components of the MCDM. We have also developed a MCDM and EDP scope and sequence guide to assist you with meeting your requirements.

These components work together to ensure students understand themselves, explore career options, and build a clear academic plan.

Three of the main components of the MCDM that can be completed in Xello are:

  • A student’s EDP
  • A student’s Talent Portfolio
  • A student’s 4-year plan

How Xello helps accomplish the EDP

Xello helps K–12 students create personalized roadmaps for future success through self-knowledge, exploration, and planning.

Starting in seventh grade, school educators or counselors are tasked with helping students begin developing an EDP, which includes components like career goals, course selections, career options, and much more.

With many requirements to meet, it’s essential to find a tool that will help you and your students be successful. Xello is that tool!

As students complete the various assessments and sections in Xello, their EDP comes to life, and provides you with the reportable metrics you need for success. The EDP becomes a personalized, living document via Xello Portfolios, which provides students with a way to create, maintain, and share their EDP. Parents can easily review their child’s EDP at any time through Xello’s Family portal.

You can feel confident knowing that your students can fulfill their EDP and the expectations set out for them in the MCDM in Xello.

Empower students to build their Talent Portfolios

As outlined in the MCDP, students are introduced to the purpose of a Talent Portfolio starting in seventh grade.
In Xello, the About Me section serves as the foundation of a student’s Talent Portfolio by helping them capture self-knowledge, experiences, and achievements. By completing the components and assessments on the About Me page, students can easily begin building their Talent Portfolio:

1. To work on fulfilling the requirements of the Talent Portfolio, students should complete their About Me profile in Xello. Here they’ll complete assessments to learn more about themselves including their Personality Style and Skills Lab Assessments.

2. In addition, students should complete the Experiences & credentials, Skills, Interests, and Places sections in Xello.

3. Finally, students can curate their Talent Portfolios using Xello Portfolios to collect and present information and artifacts they’ve gathered and created that demonstrate their talents and marketable skills.

Future-proof your students: Complete a four-year plan

The MCDM requires students to develop a multi-year course plan that aligns with their career goals. In Xello, students complete this requirement using the Course Planner, where they map out high school courses and connect them to careers, postsecondary programs like dual enrollment or CTE specializations, and future goals.
