Helping students navigate the end of the school year &#038; College decisions during uncertain times"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"intro\">How can you help students navigate the end of the school year &amp; make college decisions in light of the uncertainty due to COVID-19? During our most recent Remote Roundtable session, our expert panelists gave advice on how to help students make college decisions and prepare for an uncertain future. Here\u2019s our Remote Roundtable recap.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As April showers gives way to May flowers, many students start counting down to the end of the school year. While the second half of the current school year has upended many traditions, looking forward to what\u2019s next is not one of them.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During our second remote roundtable, which took place on <strong>April 16<\/strong><\/span><strong>th<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>, 2020<\/strong>, educators provided insights on navigating the end of the school year.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our panel of experts, who gave advice, during this roundtable, included:\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda Nolasco: School Counselor Specialist for the Arizona Department of Education.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Ehlers: Founder and President of Method Test Prep which helps students and schools prepare for the SAT, ACT, and other subjects.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindy Willard: School Counseling and Transitions Coordinator for the Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, Wisconsin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lacey Bonner: Director with the Counselor Community Engagement team with the College Board. Prior to the College Board, Bonner was a School Counselor and Director of Counseling Services.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Hickert: Business, Information and Technology Academy Principal and Coordinator of Post-Secondary Programs at Junction City High School, serving the local community and military-connected students from all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the questions and key takeaways from the panelists.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>COVID-19 has upended the end of the year for a lot of seniors, including the timing for picking a college. How do you recommend counselors help guide their students during the selection time?<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining a relationship with students and reaching out personally is key to keeping seniors on track. Although reaching out needs to be practical, counselors should also focus on students&#8217; well-being.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For seniors who have been dreaming about prom, senior trip, graduations, etc, the upended school year can be particularly tough. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think a lot of seniors are struggling right now closing out on a lot of milestones or postponing a lot of those milestones,\u201d said Willard.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping seniors focus on college and their post-secondary plans is being done in different ways, but they all start with communication.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Hickert\u2019s school, calls were made to every senior to \u201ctouch base as far as what the end of the year looked like.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Teacher advisors, who are responsible for a few seniors each, contacted the students to keep them on track &amp; if need be, to refer them back to counselors for individual or more targeted support,\u201d said Hickert.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When offering support, it\u2019s important to remember that students don&#8217;t know what they don&#8217;t know. And sometimes they just forget.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, Nolasco suggested\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being specific in the areas or topics where they need help, when reaching out to them.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nOther ways to keep seniors on track as they prepare for the postsecondary world <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include sending reminders, having webinars, and regularly updating the school blog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What role does pathway exploration play during this time? Are students considering alternative options based on anxiety and\/or financial strain?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the great uncertainty the world is undergoing, seniors may be reconsidering their pathways. This may be done out of necessity, such as financial issues, or a revaluation of priorities as students consider the situation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever decision seniors ultimately make regarding their pathway, it\u2019s important that they are comfortable and that they do what works for them. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo matter what their decision is, it&#8217;s individualized to them and there&#8217;s no canned answer, there&#8217;s no right or wrong,\u201d said Nolasco. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hickert has seen students reconsider their post-secondary plans. Some seniors at her school take part in internship programs, and they are considering whether they should take these internships during these uncertain times.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of them have decided to take a gap year and are waiting until the academic situation is a bit more clarified,\u201d Hickert said.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willard has also noticed some students re-evaluating their interests. Based on this, she believes it\u2019s a good time for guidance counselors to cease asking kids what they want to be when they enter the world of work.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStop asking our kids, &#8220;What do you want to be when you grow up?&#8221; she stressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s time we start asking our kids, &#8220;What problems do you want to solve in the world?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accepting student responses \u2013 whatever they may be \u2013 and helping them recognize their first choices for a pathway might not work out is an important role guidance counselors can serve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>State standardized tests and SATs have been postponed, how do you recommend counselors continue to support students in preparation for these so they don\u2019t lose momentum?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first things that comes to mind when considering secondary education is standardized tests, particularly the SAT and ACT. Although those tests are on hold, they are not going away for a vast majority of colleges and universities.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, students need to maintain their focus. Ehlers takes a long-term perspective, and much of the advice he shares in his webinars is no different from the past. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find myself sharing the same things that I&#8217;ve been sharing for many years and the questions people have are very basic,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many resources online to keep students engaged. One resource is the College Board\u2019s question and answer service which Ehlers views as very valuable. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonner, who says the College Board wants to help students \u201ckeep their skills sharp,\u201d notes there are practice tests available online. In addition, the College Board has developed free live AP review courses that are on YouTube.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guidance counselors can also reach out to non-profits that provide college and career services. Nolasco notes those non-profits have been happy to offer support.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to remember that testing can be anxiety inducing for students. This is on top of the stress some feel due to the pandemic and its ramifications. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, when guidance counselors work with students, Willard suggested they &#8220;consider that t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he student that you&#8217;re working with in front of you is the student that we need to cater our advice and guidance to.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, guidance counselors can help students by encouraging them to stay engaged, reminding them of services available, and being cognizant of the issues they may be facing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How are sophomore and junior students being impacted? What are your recommendations on how to support them during this time?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since schools have switched to distance learning, the school day has been shortened, and there is less emphasis on academic rigour for students. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, it is an opportune time to take on other tasks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some parents of sophomores and juniors are looking to the SAT and ACT to keep their students busy and academically challenged. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re hearing from a lot of sophomore families,\u201d said Ehlers &amp; attributed the interest to the anxiety resulting from COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hickert, whose school gave the pre-ACT prior to the outbreak, has had parents (primarily) reaching out about their children\u2019s scores and with questions about what to do, how to improve, etc. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school is touching base via its advisory platform \u201cto make sure that each student is getting what they need to move forward.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willard cautioned that it\u2019s okay for students to pause for a minute. Sophomore and juniors have time to \u201crevisit some of those interest inventories.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Nolasco viewed this time as an opportunity for self-reflection.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a time to do some things students normally didn&#8217;t have the time to do,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Learning about themselves, can help them navigate that process\u2026 [of] what they want to do and where they want to go in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She suggested taking a little while each day to learn about different careers, colleges, and majors on platforms such as Xello.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students have more time on their hands. For sophomores and juniors, the time can be allocated toward helping themselves in their quest to be future ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What tools or resources are available to counselors or teachers to help students?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel noted multiple useful tools for counselors and teachers to help their students.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hickert, whose school uses <a href=\"https:\/\/xello.world\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xello<\/a>, said it&#8217;s important to utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/xello.world\/en\/blog\/virtual-learning-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xello lessons<\/a> during this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Utilizing lessons within Xello is an amazing experience for our kids. It&#8217;s convenient for advisors to track student progress as well &amp; they can easily help students reflect on the lessons &amp; make comments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other resources mentioned were the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolcounselor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American School Counselor Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has a COVID-19 specific website with links to other resources. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willard called out professional organizations as vital resources &amp; mentioned the State School Counseling Associations, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association for College Admission Counseling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> websites, as a one-stop shop to find any updates from colleges.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willard and colleagues from across the country created a site called the COVID-19 School Counseling Task Force K-12 website. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the site will cover everything from social, emotional &amp; mental health pieces to college and career advice and everything in-between.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the College Board has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counselors.collegeboard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for counselors which has COVID-19 updates. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonner said it will include information about webinars about various topics. The site will enable counselors to have, \u201cthe most up-to-date information that we have that you can share with your students and families.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonner encouraged counselors to join the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counselors.collegeboard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Board Counselor Community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is an online community of over 15,000 counselors from around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Do you have any final advice or key learnings you\u2019d like to share?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel viewed the crisis as a learning opportunity.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willard emphasized that it\u2019s a time for educators to start thinking outside the box.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is a time for educators to start thinking outside of the box and asking ourselves questions about how we&#8217;ve always done things and how we might do things differently, not only now, but also in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heckert advised educators to, \u201cremember what you&#8217;re doing now and take away the best parts of this and bring it back to the brick and mortar setting when we get to do that.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Nolasco stressed that it&#8217;s a really great time for counselors to continue their own professional learning.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it may not have to come out of their own pockets. She noted that districts may have extra money since many expenses such as traveling for conferences have been cancelled due to COVID-19.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the school year draws to an end, school counselors are busy helping students stay focused, consider next steps, and navigate this uncertainty.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those students whose secondary education is coming to an end, counselors are there to help.<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Want to learn more about helping students make college decisions?
